The monocropping of palm in Uraba on land that belongs to local farmers has led to human rights violations such as displacement of communities, threats to food security, contamination of local water supplies, and connections to murders of local leaders.

Palm workers harvest the palm fruits to transport to the palm oil refinery. There are 7,000 hectares (17,500 acres) of palm in this region of the Curvarado and Jiguamiando rivers.
