Hiroshima Day

Sixty-seven years ago today (Aug 6th, 1945) the first atomic bomb used in warfare was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan.  Three days later (Aug 9th, 1945) Nagasaki was obliterated by another nuclear weapon.  Tens of thousands died instantly, while others succumbed later to horrific burns and radiations poisoning.  We must remember what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki lest we let it happen again.

ACTION ALERT: CTBT Turns 15, Time to Ratify It! PDF Print E-mail

Tell Your Senators to Ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT)

On September 24, 1996, the United States was the first nation to sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which would ban all nuclear test explosions or other nuclear explosions anywhere. Unfortunately, even as we are approaching the 15th anniversary of the signing, the CTBT is languishing in limbo until the US and 8 other nations ratify it. Ratifying this treaty is an important step on the road to a world free of all nuclear weapons. We must take action to push our Senators to approve the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), which prohibits all nuclear test explosions.

Join activists from across the country the week of September 24th and write your senators to urge the ratification of the CTBT.

Building a Better Bomb: Reflections on the Atomic Bomb, the Hydrogen Bomb, and the Neutron Bomb

Daniel Ellsberg

It was a hot August day in Detroit. I was standing on a street corner downtown, looking at the front page of The Detroit News in a news rack. I remember a streetcar rattling by on the tracks as I read the headline: A single American bomb had destroyed a Japanese city. My first thought was that I knew exactly what that bomb was. It was the U-235 bomb we had discussed in school and written papers about, the previous fall.
