Ten Years After the Invasion of Iraq: Reckoning

Ten years after the invasion of Iraq, we commemorate the awful human cost of an unnecessary war and demand accountability.

The Iraq war took the lives of approximately 4,500 US servicemen, over a hundred thousand Iraqis and severely wounded tens of thousands more… all for a lie, the false claim that Iraq had threatening WMDs (Weapons of Mass Destruction), a flimsy reason before the war, a proven lie after the war. Beyond the staggering human cost of the Iraq war is the staggering financial cost: the cost to the US of the Iraq war is estimated at $2.2 Trillion; the financial cost to Iraqis may be incalculable.

The invasion of Iraq and occupation was a war crime and the war criminals who directed it should be held accountable...

ACTION ALERT: Prevent War with Iran, Oppose S. Resolution 65

Senator Graham's Senate Resolution 65 "Greenlights" an Israeli attack on Iran, lays groundwork for US military intervention

Senator Lindsey Graham (SC-R) and Senator Menendez (NJ-D) introduced Senate Resolution 65, a "sense of Congress" resolution, just as the AIPAC conference was convening in Washington DC and it seems more like a "sense of AIPAC" resolution."  Senate Resolution 65 is a dangerous step toward war with Iran, "greenlighting" an Israeli preemptive attack on Iran and pledging US "diplomatic, military and economic" support for such an attack and building support for direct US military intervention.  The sponsors of this resolution hope to pass it before President Obama's March 20th visit to Israel... take action NOW!

MOX Plant at SRS Multi-Billion Dollar Boondoggle PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kathleen Whalon

Recent article from The State "Critics fear $7 billion SRS boondoggle" by Sammy Fretwell, January 27, 2013

The State's Sammy Fretwell interviews Columbia nuclear watchdog Tom Clements about cost overruns at the Savannah River Site's MOX program.

"An energy department report published last month shows that the mixed oxide fuel factory is in danger of falling behind schedule and costing more than anticipated. The DOE’s Project Dashboard report gave the mixed-oxide factory complex a red rating, the most serious of three categories on the progress of agency construction projects...But the price tag could rise to nearly $7 billion when the federal government provides new cost estimates, according to a recent letter to the U.S. Department of Energy and those who track issues concerning the SRS complex near Aiken. The new cost estimates are expected this year."

Clements has this to say

Tom Clements, a longtime anti-nuclear activist with the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability, was more blunt in his assessment. He said today’s rising costs reflect only current conditions. But the site has a history of cost questions, Clements said. Records that Clements said he has reviewed show the MOX plant, at one point in the past, was estimated to cost about $1.8 billion. Now, the project could cost as much as $7 billion, he said, referring to Markey’s letter.

“If you look at spending on the MOX plant, you’d think we are rolling in dough and have no budget problems whatsoever,” Clements said. “Nobody is minding the store on this.”
