An hour-long reflective vigil marking the 70th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and calling for nuclear disarmament.  Featuring a string quartet directed by Morihiko Nakahara of the SC Philharmonic.

Evening of Peace ~Hiroshima/Nagasaki Remembrance

SUNDAY August 9th 6:30PM-9PM

Quarterman Park (The Duck Pond)

1121 South Blvd, N. Charleston, SC

On Nagasaki Day, Aug 9th, join us for an evening devoted to peace in the world and our community.  Children will decorate sections of the sidewalk surrounding the lake while we make floating lanterns. There will be a potluck picnic at 7:00 pm. Groups working for peace and justice will have understanding stations set up around the lake. We’ll have a music and spoken word area. The event will wind up with walks of quiet reflection and conversation around the lake as the floating lanterns illuminate the lake in remembrance of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Join Upstate Peace on the 70th anniversary of Hiroshima for a special screening of Countdown to Zero.  The documentary “traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the present state of global affairs: nine nations possessing nuclear weapons capabilities with others racing to join them, leaving the world held in a delicate balance that could be shattered by an act of terrorism, failed diplomacy , or a simple accident.The film features an array of important international statesmen. The film makes a compelling case for worldwide nuclear disarmament.”

Remembering Hiroshima 70 Years On:

Winthrop University, Owens Hall, Room G01

Rock Hill for Peace, co-sponsored by the Political Science Department of Winthrop University and Global Zero-Winthrop, will hold a community speaker event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima / Nagasaki, Japan. From the retrospective of this historic first use of nuclear weapons, we will discuss the current Iran nuclear deal and the importance of nuclear non-proliferation. The event will open with a viewing of the acclaimed documentary short film, “Witness to Hiroshima,” followed by discussions from Dr. Chris Van Aller of Winthrop’s Political Science Department, Carolyn Ballard of Rock Hill for Peace and Gabriel Paxton, student coordinator for Global Zero-Winthrop.
