50 Years Ago: Dr King’s “Beyond Vietnam” Speech Called Out Racism, Materialism and Militarism

2017 marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s Beyond Vietnam speech, delivered April 4, 1967. A passionate defense of nonviolence, King called out his own government as the “greatest purveyor of violence in the world,” condemning the Vietnam war, a war that was consuming resources needed to remedy poverty and injustice a home. King went “Beyond Vietnam” and warned we would be rallying behind similar causes for a generation unless we correctly diagnosed America’s problem.  King called for a revolution in values in America from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society that valued human beings above material gain.  Here are some resources to learn more: Continue reading “50 Years Ago: Dr King’s “Beyond Vietnam” Speech Called Out Racism, Materialism and Militarism”

WHAT TO ASK FOR:

  • The National Defense Authorization Act is coming up for a vote this week.
  • Please support upcoming amendments that cut the Pentagon budget without affecting troop benefits.
  • Congress is set to spending more on the Pentagon than they ask for… some $640 million.
  • Wasteful Pentagon spending has gone unchecked.
  • Please cut the Pentagon budget by:
  1. Drawing down our presence in Afghanistan and ending the war there.
  2. Reducing our nuclear weapons arsenal.  Cold War levels of nuclear weapons are unnecessary.  Example, Tridents subs can be cut back from 14 to 8.   Cutting back the Trident sub fleet would save $30 billion just on replacement subs in the future.
  3. Reduce our troops and bases abroad.
  4. Cut wasteful weapons programs such as the way over budget F-35 jet and a half a billion $ for Abrams tanks the Pentagon doesn’t want.
  • Thank your Rep and remind him you will be watching how he votes.

Your Representative needs to hear from you.

ACTION ALERT: Prevent War with Iran, Oppose S. Resolution 65

Senator Graham’s Senate Resolution 65 “Greenlights” an Israeli attack on Iran, lays groundwork for US military intervention

Senator Lindsey Graham (SC-R) and Senator Menendez (NJ-D) introduced Senate Resolution 65, a “sense of Congress” resolution, just as the AIPAC conference was convening in Washington DC and it seems more like a “sense of AIPAC” resolution.”  Senate Resolution 65 is a dangerous step toward war with Iran, “greenlighting” an Israeli preemptive attack on Iran and pledging US “diplomatic, military and economic” support for such an attack and building support for direct US military intervention.  The sponsors of this resolution hope to pass it before President Obama’s March 20th visit to Israel… take action NOW!

Although Senate Resolution 65 disclaims “nothing in this resolution shall be construed as an authorization for the use of force or a declaration of war” the resolution affirms “that the policy of the United States is to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon capability and to take such action as may be necessary to implement this policy.” Further, the resolution states that “if the Government of Israel is compelled to take military action in self-defense, the United States Government should stand with Israel and provide diplomatic, military, and economic support.” Such a preemptive attack on Iran would draw the US into hostilities and is unacceptable to anyone who puts US interests or the interest of peace first.

Background:

Since 2001 the Pentagon budget has doubled and keeps increasing despite the fiscal crisis.   In FY 2012, Defense spending amounted to $663.7 Billion, eclipsing all other discretionary spending, and rivaling such entitlement programs as Social Security ($695 Billion, the biggest entitlement program).  Military spending has gone relatively unscathed in the recent fiscal debates.

How Much Money?  What’s the Next Step?

The 2013 House Defense appropriations bill amounted to $605.8 billion (including $87.7 billion to fund “the war” called OCO or Overseas Contingency Operations.)   The House bill will next be reconciled with a Senate Defense appropriations bill to create a final Defense appropriations bill for 2013.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has introduced a resolution in the US Senate  calling for ruling out “containment” as a response to Iran developing a nuclear weapon. The bipartisan resolution has 44Senator co-sponsors. The Graham resolution would pave the way for escalation and US or Israeli military intervention with Iran. In Graham’s own words: “All options must remain on the table when it comes to stopping Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.” The resolution is supported by powerful AIPAC (America Israel Public Affairs Committee) lobby.

While a nuclear armed Iran is undesirable, containment would be a rational response if it came to that.  Israel, with its  robust nuclear deterrent, would not truly be threatened by Iran, while Gulf  states (Saudi Arabia, etc.) have a strong US presence in the region to deter any attack.  The military option is off the table,  Sen. Graham: a US or Israeli attack on Iran is not in our our country’s interest.  Now, if you want to continue selling our nation’s foreign policy to a foreign government’s proxy lobby, there’s a choice word or two that describes that.

Friends Cmte on National Legislation  Suggested Letter to Congressmen

As Congress looks for ways to reduce the federal budget deficit, please support cutting Pentagon spending by $1 trillion over the next ten years, as was recommended by the Sustainable Defense Task Force. Please speak with your colleagues on the congressional “supercommittee” and urge them to recommend this cut in their proposal.

Pentagon spending has nearly doubled in the last ten years. While our states and cities are cutting back services, our country is continuing to pour money into war and military strategies that are not making us safer.

Please let me know if you will support cutting the Pentagon budget by $1 trillion over ten years in any legislation to address the budget deficit.
